How to loop a video on YouTube Live, 24/7

Quick answer

To loop a video on YouTube Live, add the video to a cloud streaming tool such as LoopStream Live, turn on loop, paste the stream key from YouTube Studio and press Go Live. The video is sent to YouTube on repeat as one continuous live stream, so your phone or computer does not need to stay on.

A loop video live stream is how lofi radio channels, rain sound channels and church replay channels stay live all day without anyone sitting at a desk. You record or edit the video once, and it keeps playing live on your channel around the clock. This guide covers exactly how to set one up, what to avoid, and how to keep the stream running for weeks without touching it.

What is a loop video live stream?

A loop video live stream is a YouTube live broadcast made from a pre-recorded video that plays on repeat. To viewers it behaves like any other live stream: it carries the red LIVE badge, it shows up in the Live tab of your channel, and people can chat while they watch. The difference is that nobody is in front of a camera. The same file, or a playlist of files, is sent to YouTube again and again with no gap between loops.

Under the hood, the video is encoded and pushed to YouTube over RTMP, the same protocol OBS Studio and hardware encoders use. YouTube cannot tell whether the picture comes from a camera or a file, so a looped stream is treated like any live stream.

How to loop a video on YouTube Live in 4 steps

  1. 1

Turn on live streaming for your channel

Open YouTube Studio, click Create, then Go live. If your channel has never streamed, YouTube asks you to verify a phone number, and the first activation can take up to 24 hours. You only do this once.

  2. 2

    Add your video

In LoopStream Live, create a new stream and upload your video from your phone, or paste a Google Drive or Dropbox share link so the file is fetched for you without using your mobile data. MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC audio work best. Add more videos if you want a playlist.

  3. 3

    Paste your stream key

In YouTube Studio, go to Go live, open the Stream tab and copy the Stream key. Paste it into LoopStream Live and switch on Loop continuously. Keep the key private: anyone who has it can stream to your channel.

  4. 4

    Press Go Live

Tap Go Live. Within a minute the preview appears in YouTube Studio and the stream is public on your channel. You can now close the app, lock your phone or shut your laptop. The loop keeps running on our servers.

Can you loop a live stream on YouTube without OBS?

Yes. OBS Studio can loop a media source, but OBS runs on your own computer, so that computer has to stay on, awake and online for as long as the stream runs. One Windows update, a sleep timer or a Wi-Fi drop at 3 AM and the stream ends. The other common route is renting a VPS and running FFmpeg yourself, which works but means installing software, writing a loop command and restarting it by hand when it fails.

A cloud loop streaming tool removes both problems. The encoding happens on a server, it reconnects on its own, and you control everything from a browser or the Android app.

How do you loop a playlist instead of one video?

Add several videos to the same stream and they play in order, then start again from the first one. This is the easiest way to make a 24/7 channel feel fresh, because returning viewers do not see the same clip every time they tune in. A good rule is to make the full playlist at least an hour long. Lofi and ambience channels often run three to eight hours of material on repeat.

Will the stream really stay live 24/7?

Any stream that runs for days will see YouTube drop the connection now and then. That is normal and happens to every encoder. What matters is what happens next. LoopStream Live reconnects on its own and picks up from the point the video had reached, instead of jumping back to 0:00, so viewers in the middle of a track are not thrown back to the start. You can also set a schedule to start and stop at fixed times, once or every day, if you do not want the channel live around the clock.

What kind of videos work best on a 24/7 loop?

Loop streams do best with content that people leave playing in the background, where a repeat is not a problem:

  • Lofi, jazz and study music for focus sessions
  • Rain, ocean, fireplace and forest ambience for sleep
  • White noise and meditation tracks
  • Sermon, bhajan, kirtan and Quran recitation replays
  • Podcast episodes and talk show reruns
  • Nature and scenic camera footage
  • Product demos and menu boards for shops and restaurants
Only stream videos and music you own or are licensed to use. YouTube's Content ID checks live streams too, and a claim on third-party music can stop the stream or limit it.

Tips for a smooth loop stream

  • Export at a steady frame rate, 30 fps is ideal, and keep one resolution for the whole file, 1080p or 720p.
  • Add a short fade at the start and end of the video so the loop point is not jarring.
  • Put what the stream is, plus 24/7, in the title, for example Rain sounds for sleep, 24/7, and use a custom thumbnail.
  • Write a description that says the stream is a looped recording. Honest titles keep viewers and keep you clear of misleading-content rules.
  • Check the stream health panel in YouTube Studio once after going live. It should read Excellent or Good.
